So last time, we saw Regis and Entreri's battle of wills continue. And I have to admit, it's by far the most tense and interesting part of the book so far.

The chapter we're on now, however, is the "epilogue", for the first "book" of the story. I presume we'll either have reached, or be approaching, some transition point.

This time, we rejoin Drizzt and Wulfgar on the Sea Sprite. Wulfgar is doing something with the mainsail, pulling and heaving on ropes to the amazement of the ship's crew. Apparently, the ship has met some unfavorable currents, and usually a sensible captain would just drop anchor and wait for a better breeze, but that's not really necessary when you have a giant helping you.

Baldur's Gate is in sight! Yay!

Captain Deudermont is pretty impressed with Wulfgar, who has taken to sea life surprisingly well. Per Drizzt, Wulfgar's been enjoying the physical challenge of the open ocean, with the pull of water and wind. It's different from anything he's ever experienced.

Meanwhile, Deudermont and Drizzt are bonding. Drizzt seems rather taken with him:

Drizzt looked at Deudermont with sincere admiration and even a measure of envy. The captain was a proud man, but he tempered his pride with a practical rationale. Deudermont respected the sea and accepted it as his superior. And that acceptance, that profound understanding of his own place in the world, gave the captain as much of an advantage as any man could gain over the untamed ocean.

...I could ship it. Wulfgar gets two dads this way. Or three. Now that Bruenor's back.

Anyway, they're planning to stop over in Baldur's Gate for two days. The original plan was to be a week, but Deudermont is sympathetic to their haste, and apparently, he talked to the crew and everyone's on board with leaving early.

Aw! This bit of shore leave is probably the first break they got for a while, and they're giving it up for Drizzt and Wulfgar! I've said it before, but Salvatore's really good at making side characters that I like and care about.

Anyway, as they start docking, they're met at the pier by a wiry, finely dressed man. Pellman, the harbormaster. He asks if they have two adventurers: one small and mysterious, elflike, and one a giant, strong as any man alive.

Of course, he's asking because of Entreri's hypnotic suggestion. He's got a message. Deudermont gives Drizzt the choice of whether or not to respond. Drizzt isn't anticipating a trap, he knows that Entreri wants a fight not an ambush, so they'll speak.

Deudermont tells them that he'll try to retrieve them if there's trouble, and they're willing to wait in port as long as two weeks if needed. He also extends the invitation for them to sleep aboard ship if they need.

So Pellmen greets them, civilly enough. He gives the pouch to Wulfgar and relays the message that Entreri will await their arrival in Calimport. Pellman bows and leaves. But then, we're told that he has another mission to complete. He heads to the house of Oberon (the wizard that Entreri had gone to see.)

Drizzt and Wulfgar open the pouch and, as predicted, there's a halfling's finger inside.

How utterly shocking. This very short chapter ends here.
